4 tips to prepare your business for an outage

Home / Energy advice / 4 tips to prepare your business for an outage

The official monsoon begins June 15 and will bring with it lightning, heavy rain and high winds that can snap utility poles and down power lines.

While power outages can be unpredictable, there are things you can do ahead of time to prepare, minimize disruptions and protect your business.

  1. Sign up for notifications: To stay ahead of a storm, sign up for notifications via email or text to get updates on restoration times, weather alerts and more. Log in to My Account today to set the types of alerts you want to receive.
  2. Create a plan: Develop a business continuity plan with key employees, keeping the impact of service disruptions in mind. Define roles and responsibilities in the plan and make sure everyone is trained.
  3. Keep basic supplies handy: Assemble emergency supplies ahead of time. We recommend flashlights and extra batteries, first-aid kit, basic tools, battery-powered radio, a list of emergency phone numbers and car adaptors/chargers for cell phones, laptops and tablets.
  4. Unplug equipment: Protect office equipment from voltage fluctuations. We recommend unplugging or turning off telephones, fax machines, computers, copy machines, lights and air conditioners during a storm.
